Inglis eyes return to Storm front as horror season ends

EXCLUSIVE
A SHATTERED Greg Inglis has become so disillusioned with rugby league that he's barely watched a game since the Storm were stripped of two premierships in April, but he's already counting down the days until he can return to the Melbourne club.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun-Herald, the Brisbane-bound centre said the season couldn't end soon enough. ''Since all that salary-cap stuff I don't really care [about this year's competition],'' the 23-year-old Maroons and Kangaroos flyer said.

''I haven't paid much attention to the ladder whatsoever. I haven't really seen any games this year - maybe a few Monday night games because I'm at home anyway and there's nothing on.

''I don't even know who's playing well. I live and breathe it, so what's the point of watching it all the time?''

Having likened the Melbourne club's camaraderie to that of the Queensland State of Origin team since the saga unfolded, Inglis said he couldn't wait to return to the Storm once his contract with the Broncos was completed.

''It's only a two-year deal so hopefully I can head back down there down the track,'' he said.

''I absolutely love the club. It's great down there. It's a great coaching staff, we've got a great supporter base and I've got a lot of friends down there.

''I love the lifestyle. It's tough to think I'm leaving. I'll gain a lot of friends but I'm also losing a lot of close ones as well. I'm leaving a lot behind, too.''

One of the NRL's most sincere personalities, Inglis said he would never be able to look at people the same after having been taken advantage of by the former Storm administration and consequently forced out of the club that turned him into a superstar.

''I definitely look at things and people differently now,'' said a sombre Inglis, who will miss the Four Nations after the Broncos encouraged him to undergo shoulder surgery in two weeks instead of after the international series.

''Obviously, after all this stuff has happened to me, I look at other things with my eyes a lot wider open now. I look for different passageways and agendas.

''I'm a lot more cynical and I'm not as trusting as I used to be. You open your eyes. I look at different types of angles with things.

''I've always been cruisy, not one for the media - I don't really like doing it. I've always just liked to go about my own business, but probably more so now.

''After what the boys and I have been through this year, I just want to live life to the fullest. I can't wait for the holidays, to be honest. I just want to get away from footy and chill.''

He said worse than having to play for no points was the public perception that he was a cheat - something that's deeply affected his once-infectious enthusiasm and that of his teammates.

''It's affected a lot of people close to me,'' he said. ''And as players and player agents we couldn't help what the administration did. I don't think people who are looking from the outside in maybe understand that. I trust my manager, Allan Gainey, I've been with him for a long time and if he puts something in front of me I'll sign it. It's affected all of us.

''After such a big shock and a big year, I'm just looking forward to the final siren so I can forget all about this year and move on to next year.

''It sort of feels like it's gone quick but every day is kind of long - you go to training and bust yourself and think, 'What am I doing this for?' Times have been tough.

You would have to question his commitment to the broncos.

I wonder if Brisbane will play him in his preferred position of fullback, or has he been a centre too long now that people have forgotten...

I said when the salary cap scanal broke that we'd see Inglis playing fullback for the Broncs next year. I'm not so sure now though, Hoffman is quite promising.

On another note, how pissed would you be if you were a Broncos fan reading all that crud about him wanting to go back to the Storm before he's even left?

It's bad enough when someone signs with another team mid-season, he's two years out FFS
Great player, confused and confusing individual.

He says that now... just wait and see what happens when he realises the Storm won't be able to pay him $600,000 a season two years from now. ;)

Loyal as he thinks he is, he won't take the presumably massive paycut for the sake of old loyalties two years from now, especially once he's made new friends up at the Broncos.

Interesting to see how he goes living in Brissy :hmmm

At the storm living in Melb he was an unknown and no one cared. Living in Brisbane will be a whole different story. Andrew Symonds the second :hmmm

I am calling it now - He will make the headlines next year for all the wrong reasons
